16/08/2010 12:19 pm Sun's 'quiet period' explained |
| Solar physicists may have discovered why the Sun recently experienced a prolonged period of weak activity. Air Max 1 The most recent so-called "solar minimum" occurred in December 2008. Its drawn-out nature extended the total length of the last solar cycle - the repeating cycle of the Sun's activity - to 12.6 years, making it the longest in almost 200 years. During a solar minimum the Sun is less active, producing fewer sunspots and flares. The new research suggests that the longer-than-expected period of weak activity may have been linked to changes in the way a hot soup of charged particles called plasma circulated in the Sun. Air Max 180 Plus II The study, conducted by Dr Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado and her US colleagues, is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The Sun's activity strengthens and weakens on a cycle that typically lasts 10.7 years. Since accurate records began in 1755, there have been 24 such solar cycles. The 23rd cycle, which ended in December 2008, was both longer than average and had the smallest number of sunspots for a century. Sunspots are areas of intense magnetic activity that are visible as dark spots on the star's surface. Air Max TN Currents of fire The new research suggests that one reason for the prolonged period of weak activity could be changes in the Sun's "conveyor belt". Similar to the Earth's ocean currents, the Sun's conveyor transports plasma across its surface to the pole. Here, the plasma sinks into the heart of the Sun before rising again at the equator. During the 23rd cycle, these currents of fire extended all the way to the poles, while in earlier cycles they only extended about two thirds of the way. Air Max 2003 Dr Roger Ulrich of the University of California, Los Angeles, a co-author of the study, said the findings highlighted the importance of our monitoring of the Sun. The research team used sophisticated computer simulations to show how changes in the conveyor might have affected cycle duration. They found that the increased length of the conveyor and its slower rate of return flow explained the prolonged 23rd cycle. However, Dr David Hathaway, a solar physicist from Nasa's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, who was not involved in the latest study, argued that it was the speed and not the extent of the conveyor that was of real importance. Air Max TN 10 The conveyor has been running at record high-speeds for over five years. Dr Hathaway said: "I believe this could explain the unusually d solar minimum." 13/08/2010 11:38 am General Motors boss to stand down |
| The chief executive of the US car giant General Motors has announced plans to resign. Air Max Kids 180 Edward Whitacre will leave the role in September, after taking over last year to guide the company through restructuring. He will hand over to current board member Dan Akerson, but will stay on as chairman until the end of the year. Earlier, GM reported second-quarter profits of $1.6bn (¡ê1bn), the company's biggest profit in six years. They also mark the second consecutive quarter of profits, following the companies big losses in 2009, when it was forced to seek bankruptcy protection. Air Max Elite It was also forced to seek government support, along with rival Chrysler, to allow it to emerge from bankruptcy and restructure. The company said the results showed "sustained progress" in the turnaround of the company. GM has cut more than 65,000 jobs in the US and closed factories in an attempt to cut costs in the last year. Air Max Skyline It has also sold its Saab brand and wound down others, though it has retained its European brands, Opel and Vauxhall. Share sale plans While GM's losses for the second half of 2009 totalled $4.3bn, the companies has made a profit of $2.8bn so far this year. Announcing his resignation, Mr Whitacre said he had achieved what he set out to do on joining GM in July last year. Air Max II "My goal in coming to General Motors was to help restore profitability, build a strong market position, and position this iconic company for success [and] we are clearly on that path," he said. Mr Whitacre will leave the company still 61% owned by the US and Canadian governments, which took equity stakes in return for financial help last year. GM is believed to be currently planning an initial public offering (IPO) which will see shares sold back to private investors, reducing its reliance on government aid. Air Max Stab No details of the IPO were announced in the quarterly results, but they are expected in the next few days. It could be worth up to $16bn, making it the second-biggest share sale in US history. Government loans worth $8.4bn have already been paid back. 11/08/2010 11:45 am Dead child taken to Durham police station was strangled |
| Supt Rob Coulson of Durham Police said officers would investigate what caused the "tragic" death of the toddler Air Max 93 A child who was pronounced dead after his mother carried him into a County Durham police station was strangled, a post-mortem examination has revealed. Melanie Ruddell, 39, from Castle Eden, arrived at Peterlee police station on Monday with her two-year-old son, Christy. He was later confirmed dead. She was arrested on suspicion of murder and was taken to a secure hospital. A family member who was concerned for her welfare had taken her to hospital on Sunday night but she was discharged. 'Tragic incident' Air Max 95 A spokeswoman for the University Hospital of Hartlepool confirmed that Mrs Ruddell had been taken to the A&E department on Sunday, but she was released. Det Supt Adrian Green said a post-mortem examination carried out on Monday at Sunderland Royal Hospital confirmed the boy had died as a result of being strangled. "This is a tragic incident which obviously has left both families concerned extremely shocked and distressed," he said. Air max 97 "We believe the boy was already dead for some time before he and his mother arrived at the police station. "At this stage we are still in the process of establishing what happened on Monday morning, and a major part of our investigation involves determining the exact location where the death took place. "While we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder, we would like to hear from anyone who has information which might be useful." Air Max BW Police said on Tuesday Mrs Ruddell had suffered injuries to her arms, which were believed to be self-inflicted. Detectives are due to speak to her later, once they are given permission by medical staff. Air Max Kids 180 Air Max LTD Air Max LTD 2 Air-Max-LTD2 Air Max Plus |

04/08/2010 11:20 am Fires still spreading in parched Russia |
| Moscow is mobilising more forces to fight hundreds of wildfires raging across a vast area of central Russia amid a record heatwave. Air Max 180 At least 40 people have died in fires in the past week, and seven regions are under a state of emergency. Some fires are in danger of getting out of control, the government said. Officials say a naval aviation storage area outside Moscow burnt down last week, with the loss of an unknown quantity of hardware. Nobody was hurt but 13 warehouses were destroyed in the blaze near Kolomna, which began on Thursday and lasted into Friday, military prosecutors said. Air Max 180 Plus II According to Russian news agency Interfax, the Kolomna depot services aircraft from all of Russian navy's fleets. Earlier, the defence ministry denied Russian media reports that scores of planes and helicopters had been destroyed. Elsewhere, extra firefighters went to protect a major nuclear facility at Sarov, in the Nizhny Novgorod region. It was a top secret site in the Cold War. Many children are also being evacuated from summer camps threatened by fires. Air Max TN About a fifth of Russia's grain crop has been destroyed and there was another big rise in the price of wheat on international markets on Monday. No let-up in the record heatwave is expected in the next few days. Temperatures in the Moscow area are expected to hit about 38C (100F) this week. 'Out of control' At a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said firefighters had managed to protect 360 populated areas in danger of forest blazes. Air Max 2003 But he warned that the situation was dangerously unpredictable. "In some places it is getting out of control and urgent firefighting manoeuvres are needed," he said. About 155,000 people, including 124,000 emergency workers, and more than 20,000 units of machinery are currently being used to fight the fires across Russia, the minister said. Most of 323 new fires which flared up on Monday were put out. Air Max 2009 However, 529 fires continued to burn on Tuesday over an area of 172,300 ha (425,762 acres), compared with 460 on Monday. Mr Shoigu confirmed that many of the fires were caused by human negligence. An eyewitness travelling in forested areas east of Moscow over the past week told the BBC she had seen smokers on a train flick smouldering cigarette butts from windows, and motorists likewise discarding them along roads. Air Max TN 10 The head of the ministry's crisis centre, Vladimir Stepanov, said municipal bodies in central Russia "must mobilise all their forces, not just sit and wait for fire brigades to arrive". Poor visibility Russian officials say more firefighters are being deployed south of the Sarov nuclear research centre as a precaution. Air Max 2009 II More than 2,000 people fought a blaze in the area on Monday and 1,000 were still at work on Tuesday in conditions of poor visibility, Mr Shoigu said.
